Portrait of James Rowe, founder of Final Wishes

Hi, I’m James.

For more than 25 years, I’ve worked in healthcare, mostly alongside people living with neurodegenerative conditions like ALS and Parkinson’s. Early in my career, I trained in Speech and Language Pathology, and specialized in a field called Augmentative and Alternative Communication, helping people who were losing their voice find new ways to be heard.

That work taught me something I’ll never forget: communication is precious, and none of us knows how much time we have to say what matters most.

Over the years, I sat with many families who lost someone far sooner than they expected. And so often, in the middle of their grief, they were also carrying a quieter burden: not knowing what their loved one would have wanted. What kind of service. What kind of send-off. What mattered to them, and what didn’t.

I used to think, someone should build a place for this. Somewhere safe, private, and truly secure, where people could put their wishes into words, long before they’re needed.

But it was one conversation that made me finally do it.

I was at a funeral, standing with one of my wife’s cousins, not long after she’d lost her mother. She told me that the hardest part wasn’t the loss itself. It was sitting in the funeral home afterward, trying to make decisions with no idea what her mother would have chosen. The ceremony. The casket. The music. All of it left to guesswork, at the exact moment she had the least capacity to guess.

What stayed with me was this: she and her mother had been close. Truly close. And still, they had never had that conversation. Not because they didn’t love each other enough to have it, but because there was never an easy moment, or an easy way, to start.

That was the moment I knew this site had to exist. Not as another item on someone’s to-do list, and not as a legal document full of clauses no one wants to read. Just a quiet, private space where people could set down what they wanted, in their own words, for the people who love them.

Final Wishes was built for that Aunt. That Cousin. And for everyone else out there who has never quite found the moment, or the words, to have that conversation.

If you’re here, you already understand why this matters. Thank you for trusting us with something so personal. We built this so that one day, your family won’t have to guess. They’ll simply know.
